Prof Fred Hilmer, Vice Chancellor, UNSW, praises the Liberal Arts

In an article published in The Australian on April 1st, 2009 Professor Fred Hilmer, Vice Chancellor of the University of NSW, praises the qualites of graduates who undertake studies in the Liberal Art. Here is a quote fom a wide ranging interview, by Luke Slattery

"He (Hilmer) is especially cheered by the strong growth in engineering enrolments at the UNSW and the strength of business and commerce. "But the liberal arts are really important," he adds. "You can say the MBA got it wrong. But if you go to America every one of those MBAs has a liberal arts undergraduate degree. We should be looking at that."

As the global financial crisis exposed flaws in the constitution of, in the first instance, the best and the brightest, Hilmer believes the recovery demands curriculum reform and renewed attention to personal and public ethics.

It's difficult to know if he means this as a provocation - a debate starter - or a statement of intention.

As Australia's only College teaching the Liberal Arts, Campion, we are very aware that all graduates need at least some form of study which encourages the study of the Liberal Arts

Campion's inaugural graduation a huge success

Prime Minister sings the praises of the Liberal Arts.

The Prime Minister Kevin Rudd believes that there is more to Higher Education than simply studying for a job.

In a speech delivered on his behalf by Mr. Jason Clare, Member for Blaxland, the Prime Minister said “A liberal arts education gives students the chance to develop themselves in preparation for a career, before they embark on one. Vocational training remains very important. But there’s a strong argument that students benefit from a broader education before they choose a specific career”.

“In the long run, a liberal arts education may even prove the best preparation for the jobs of the future” said Mr. Rudd.

Mr. Jason Clare was a last minute stand-in for the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who could not attend the inaugural graduation ceremony of Australia’s only Catholic Liberal Arts College, due to the extension by one day to the sitting period of the House. The ceremony was held in the Great Hall of the University of Sydney last Friday.

Mr. Rudd’s speech went on to say that “There’s a strong argument that this vocational emphasis comes too early, especially in a world where people change jobs and careers many times through their lives. Campion College’s position on this debate is clear”.

Bishop Kevin Manning of Parramatta said “As graduates of the Bachelor of Arts in the Liberal Arts, there are three qualities that should underpin your deeds. These are fearlessness in the advocacy of human dignity, love, and proclamation of the mission of Christ.”

Campion is unashamedly Catholic in its outlook, and looks to the enduring link between religious faith and freedom of thought and of conscience.

“There is a place in Australia’s higher education landscape for a college which openly examines faith and reason, the two planks of western Christian tradition. It is of utmost importance to billions of people around the world” said Acting President Dr David Daintree.

“ In today’s world , there is a need for rational thought and deep thinking, a place to re- examine priorities and to look at what is important to people in life and work’. said Dr Daintree.

He encouraged employers to look at humanities graduates as a source of employees who, can think outside the square and who contributed more than just technical expertise.

What do these people have in common?

Kevin Rudd, Pope John Paul II and John Anderson, the former deputy Prime Minister of Australia. All of these people studied liberal arts either at Liberal Arts Colleges or through majors at University. For many years people have come to believe that unless you complete a purely vocational degree then your prospects of a career are diminished. However, there are many examples of high profile and very successful Liberal Arts graduates who have had not only tremendous careers but high profile leadership roles.
